Satellite Internet Dictionary

Fast, reliable Internet access is key to operating any business. Satellite Internet is a fast and secure way to conduct important business functions online even if your location is out of range of fiber, cable, and DSL Internet service. When you’re comparing Internet service providers, you will see several terms used to describe the included services and options. Our helpful dictionary is designed to define what those terms mean and explain how they affect your business Internet connection.

Satellite Internet

Rather than sending signals through wires, satellite Internet is delivered through satellite transmission from 22,000 miles out in space. Your business computer or mobile device requests a Webpage by sending a signal to our satellite, which is in geosynchronous orbit 22,000 miles away. Our satellite then contacts the Hughes Network Operations Center (NOC) to locate the specific Webpage requested. Finally, the Website beams the information back to the NOC and then to your HughesNet® dish and modem.

High-speed Internet

Also called broadband Internet, high-speed Internet describes any Internet connection that is not delivered through a dial-up modem. Unlike terrestrial high-speed Internet options that are only available to customers within a specific distance from a hub, HughesNet for Business is available to businesses throughout the contiguous United States, even if it is in a remote location.

Upload Speeds

Upload speed refers to the time required for your Internet connection to transmit data from your computer to its destination, such as the time it takes an emailed invoice to be delivered to your customer’s inbox. Upload speed is always slower than download speed, and can be affected by additional factors such as the speed of your computer processor and the number of devices simultaneously accessing your connection. It is usually measured in Mbps, or megabytes per second. HughesNet is designed to delivered upload speeds of 3 Mbps**.

Download Speeds

Download speeds refer to the time required for information to travel from the original destination, such as a Website, to your computer. Download speeds can also be affected the number of other devices accessing your connection. It is also measured in Mbps, or megabytes per second. HughesNet is designed to deliver download speeds up to 25 Mbps**.

Wi-Fi Connection

Wi-Fi allows Internet-ready devices such as printers, mobile phones, tablets, and laptops to access the Internet without a physical connection to the modem. Connecting over Wi-Fi allows you to avoid using your mobile data plan. HughesNet is compatible with any standard wireless router, allowing you to set up a Wi-Fi connection at your business in a rural location via your satellite Internet service and access your service from anywhere in your place of business. Visit the FAQs page for more details about wireless Internet connectivity.

Our mobile app makes it easy to access these tools even when you’re away from your primary business computer.

Daytime Data

Each HughesNet plan includes Daytime Data and Anytime Data. Daytime Data is available between the prime business hours of 8am and 6pm local time.

Anytime Data

Unlike Daytime Data, Anytime Data can be used 24/7, which allows you to use it during the day, once your daytime allotment has been used, or at night when it may be more convenient to send or download large files without slowing your other computer tasks.

Satellite Internet Installation

To ensure your business Internet system is properly installed and configured, a certified HughesNet installer will contact you to schedule the installation at your place of business. The service includes installing a small satellite antenna outside, setting up the modem, and connecting your business devices.

Data Tokens

HughesNet will not cut off your service if you exceed your data allowance in a given month, however your download speeds will slow to 1-3 Mbps. If you would like to restore your business Internet service to full speed before the start of your next service month, you can purchase additional data tokens to add more data to your subscription immediately.
