Hughes Mobile IP Terminal Key to CNN Emmy Winning Satellite News-gathering Solution

CNN Awarded Technology & Engineering Award by National Television Academy of Arts & Science

Germantown, Md., January 15, 2008-Hughes Network Systems, LLC (Hughes), the global leader in broadband satellite networks and solutions, announced today that its 9201 mobile satellite IP terminal, which operates over the Inmarsat BGAN (Broadband Global Area Network) system, is part of the CNN satellite newsgathering solution honored by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The Technology and Engineering Emmy Award was announced recently at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The CNN team was awarded the Emmy for "development and implementation of an integrated and portable IP-based live, edit, and store-and-forward digital newsg-athering system." The Technology and Engineering Emmy Awards honor excellence in advances in the use, creativity, and adaptation of technology that enhances or improves the consumer experience with media across multiple platforms.

"We are very proud to be part of the CNN team honored with an Emmy Award," said Graham Avis, vice president at Hughes. "Our high-speed and compact 9201 BGAN mobile terminal enables reporters to deliver streaming news as events unfold- packaged together in a small backpack including Streambox® equipment and battery power, and easily set up to operate in even the most remote locations."

Operating over Inmarsat's BGAN system, which provides connectivity to more than 80 percent of the world's population and land mass via satellite, the Hughes 9201 terminal streamlines the process of live media feeds, replacing what in the past amounted to a truckful of equipment. The CNN winning solution also incorporates a portable encoder from Streambox, which encodes and decodes video footage in real-time, providing superior video quality at low data rates. By combining the Streambox equipment with the Hughes 9201 terminal, much higher bandwidth and transmission speeds are achieved than with previous mobile satellite technology.
